Unpleasant but Necessary: Teaching About the Holocaust
Thursday August 15, 2024 11:00am - 11:45am EDT
In this session, participants will explore the resources available for teaching the Holocaust as mandated by the Gizella Abramson Holocaust Education Act, which stipulates that Holocaust education must be included in all grade levels’ curricula. Resources highlighted will include materials from the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust and the USHMM (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s) Guidelines for Teaching the Holocaust, including a lesson using historical photographs from the USHMM’s collection that teachers can use in their classrooms no matter the age or subject.

Teaching Holocaust history demands a high level of sensitivity and a keen awareness of the complexity of the subject matter, and these resources and lessons will help teachers explore responsible pedagogy in addressing this subject matter, aiding student comprehension of how and why the Holocaust and other genocides occurred as well as what steps are necessary to prevent future genocides.
